Lymphatic drainage is a very gentle but highly effective form of massage which involves specific and specialised light pumping movements of the skin towards the lymph nodes to stimulate the action of the lymphatic system.

There are around twice as many lymph vessels as blood vessels in the body.  However, unlike blood, which is pumped around your body by your heart, the lymph system has no pump.  The lymphatic system relies on the pressure from your blood vessels and movement from your muscles to carry white blood cells and antibodies and remove metabolic waste and excess fluids from the body.  Because of these functions, the lymphatic system is a vital part of the body's immune system, which fights against illness and infection.

When the lymphatic system becomes sluggish excess fluid and stagnation can be retained in the body affecting all it's main systems leading to tight muscles, water retention, heavy limbs, stiff joints, lower back pain, bloating and poor energy levels.  The Lymphatic system can become sluggish due to illness, injury, surgery, scar tissue, stress, poor lifestyle and lack of movement.

The treatment is very relaxing due to its gentle nature and has the added benefit of calming the nervous system and reliving stress and tension.  It can also have a positive effect on the skin, digestion and bloating, insomnia, cellulite and general wellbeing.  Lymphatic drainage massage can be a great accessory to a training or fitness programme helping to speed up healing of injuries and decreasing post exercise recovery time by removing waste and increasing oxygen to the muscles.
